11 Cholf the Lone He Wolf

Day Two

Willamette Forest, Oregon

“Red is away from home with his human master, visiting a female human named Katelyn,” Cholf told Neya in between biting at the two Dobermans, who were biting at him.

Well, he thought to himself, the first thing I said to her didn’t come out smooth like I wanted it to, but at least I’m talking to her now!

The stranger’s voice came back to him so unexpectedly, Cholf almost lost his balance.

“Yes!” the stranger said inside Cholf’s head, “And you showed up just in time to help her out, too! Good job!”

The aliens were too close to Neya for Cholf’s comfort.

How can she stand to be around these aliens? Didn’t her nanny tell her the wolf stories? Their alien-ness might rub off on her!

The stranger didn’t have anything to say about that, so Cholf assumed he agreed.

“Go on home, Neya,” Cholf told her between two more bites at the Dobermans, “I’ve got this.”

Neya took a painfully long time to get a move on.

Ducking bites and getting some of his own bites in, Cholf wondered why she didn’t run home, given the chance. Oh yeah, she doesn’t know who I am yet, he realized.

“I’m Cholf, by the way,” he said while ducking under Spar’s lunge and simultaneously running from Dirk’s spring.

“Smooth move!” said the stranger inside Cholf’s head.

“Hello, Cholf,” Neya said, cocking her head sideways to watch him and raising one paw up as if to run down into the action. “Do you need help?”

Ack! Can’t she see I’m giving her an opportunity to escape without having to fight these guys off? Cholf thought. He had no doubt she could fight them off. She was a wolf, after all, and they were namby pamby dog aliens. Her mouth was bigger than their heads. But Cholf was trying to be gallant.

“No, it doesn’t appear she can see that,” the stranger said in Cholf’s mind.

I know that, Cholf thought back at the stranger while he lunged at the pair of dog aliens.

“Then why did you ask?”

Can we get back to Neya?

“Yes! I think you should!”

Briefly raising his head up from Spar’s throat while sitting on Dirk to keep him down, Cholf told Neya, “No no, I’ve got this. You might as well go on home. Like I said, your friend Red isn’t here. His human took him to go visit his human’s female friend, Katelyn.”

Neya’s eyebrows knitted together again, and she quickly stood up straight and took a few steps backward, raising her head to say, “Dirk, Spar, is this true? Is Red not even here, and you didn’t tell me?”

So that Spar could talk, Cholf let up on Spar’s throat again, and he told him, “Answer the lady’s question, Spar.”

Spar tried to take advantage of Cholf’s gallantry. In this moment with his throat free, he wriggled his head around, trying to get the rest of his body free from Cholf’s hold.

Quick as lightning, Cholf turned so that he was sitting his full weight on Spar and holding Dirk down with his front paws, instead.
